How do Original Andrews Salts Work?
What are Original Andrews Salts?
Original Andrews Salts, also know Andrews Liver Salts, are a form of magnesium carbonate antacid that provides relief from stomach upsets and abdominal discomfort.
What are Antacids & their Benefits?
Simply put, antacids are a type of medication that can control the levels of acid in your stomach. They work by either directly neutralising stomach acid that helps to aid digestion, increasing its pH or reducing or blocking the secretion of acid by gastric cells to reduce acidity in the stomach. Different types of antacids include aluminium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate and magnesium trisilicate and can be available in tablet, powder or liquid form.
Some antacids are also combined with simethicone that helps to reduce wind or another group of medicines called alginates that are added to protect the lining of the oesophagus from stomach acid. Antacids were commonly used before the discovery of more modern medicines and they are still used today to provide quick relief from the symptoms caused by stomach acid including heartburn, indigestion, acid reflux and other digestion problems.
How do Antacids & Andrews Salts Work?
Your stomach naturally produces acid to help with the digestion of food and to kill bacteria. Because this acid is corrosive, your body builds up a natural mucous barrier to protect the lining of the stomach from being eroded.
Sometimes, this barrier may have broken down allowing the acid to damage the stomach, which could result in a stomach ulcer. On the other hand, there may be a problem with the sphincter (the muscular band at the top of the stomach) that keeps the stomach tightly closed. This problem may also allow the acid to escape and irritate the oesophagus, also known as acid reflux or oesophagitis.
Because antacids work by neutralising the stomach acid, this makes the contents of the stomach less corrosive and therefore relieving the pain and burning sensations associated with stomach ulcers and digestive problems like heartburn and acid reflux. They can neutralise the acid because the chemicals within the antacid base are alkalis - the opposite of an acid. When the acid and the alkali meet, it creates a neutral state.
How to Take Antacids:
Antacids can be taken when symptoms are already experienced or when they are expected, so they can be taken before or after a meal. Different people will have different preferences to which form of antacids they wish to take, like tablets or powder mixed with water to create a liquid. You can either gain a prescription for antacids from your doctor, or over-the-counter remedies are also available. Different doses of antacids will require different doses, so make sure you read the packaging or speak with a healthcare professional before taking them. They should provide quick relief and most people who take antacids will not experience any side effects.
About Original Andrews Salt
Andrews Liver Salt dates back to 1894 when it was first sold by William Henry Scott and William Murdoch Turner as part of their business, Scott and Turner. Back then, it was known as Andrews Liver Salt. Named after St Andrews Church in Newcastle upon Tyne, which was a stone's throw from their office, Scott and Turner sold it as an effective laxative and antacid for mild stomach complains.
Today, though Scott and Turner no longer exist, Andrews Liver Salt is just as good as ever with many people turning to it as a reliable, stomach and antacid remedy.
