Selenium plays a key role in protecting cells from oxidative stress caused by high levels of free radicals in the body. The body encounters free radicals daily through activities like frying foods, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, and exposure to pesticides and air pollution, all of which release free radicals that can damage cells through oxidation.
