Plant sterols can stop unwanted cholesterol from the things you eat being absorbed in the small intestine. As a result, plant sterols can keep your cholesterol levels at the normal level, or - even better, help lower your blood cholesterol and thus reduce a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease.
It's a convenient way to get your recommended daily intake without the added calories or fat found in sterol-enriched margarine or dairy produce. To obtain the beneficial effect of lowering blood cholesterol it is recommended taking three tablets daily, providing 2,400mg plant sterols (as well as high levels of the active molecules 'beta-sitosterols').
