Low levels of folate, the natural form of folic acid found in our bodies, is a risk factor for birth defects, such as spina bifida, in the unborn baby. Therefore, The Department of Health recommends that women take a folic acid 400 µg supplement from at least one month before conception until the 12th week of pregnancy to prevent this.
